Synths are a particularly repugnant form of robot, as they represent an unforgivable corruption of human life: Assembled in a laboratory by machines, rather than conceived by human beings. Of particular importance is the destruction of rogue robotics: Machines are meant to serve humanity, under human control, rather than make their own decisions freely. The list generally includes feral ghouls, super mutants, rogue robots, and synths, but is often expanded to include various raider tribes, as a service to the local community. Typically, it involves destroying abominations that threaten humanity, products of man’s hubris. Through containment of technological abuse and the extermination of abominations and other threats to people in the wasteland (although often these are both one and the same). This is particularly important for suits of power armor and soldiers of the Brotherhood are obligated to scuttle their suits if they are at risk of looting.Ģ. By extension, if any form of dangerous technology is at risk of falling into enemy hands, standing orders are to destroy it. By collecting advanced technologies, the Brotherhood also keeps them away from people who would abuse it for its own ends. Brotherhood patrols scour countless ruins across the wasteland to retrieve technologies of all kinds, in order to study, understand, and use them. Each member of the Brotherhood has two main obligations:ġ. As part of this effort, the Brotherhood aims to understand the nature of technology, its power, and relationship with humans. The Brotherhood focuses on preventing this scenario from repeating itself, knowing that humanity is liable to repeat the same mistakes. The rapid, unbound technological progress would become mankind’s undoing, as bio-engineered plagues, FEV, and of course, nuclear weapons brought mankind to its knees. Corporations developed, exploited, and benefited from new technologies, while offloading the environmental and human costs onto the common people. The new frontier of scientific understanding was explored without regard for the damage it caused. By the second half of the 21st century, as jingoism and consumerism grew rampant, technological development outpaced man’s restraint. For example, nuclear technology could be harnessed to provide mankind with limitless power, even if the same principles allowed the same materials to be engineered into weapons of mass destruction. As long as it was moderated by morality and forethought, science was a boon for humanity. In the Brotherhood’s eyes, abuse of technology was one of the major contributing factors of the Great War. The ideology was formulated by Elder Arthur Maxson, as part of a broader reform aimed at restoring the Brotherhood’s position in the wasteland and ensuring their continued survival. Looking back to the earliest years of the Brotherhood, the reforged ideology can be summarized in the following sentence: Control technology, so that it may serve humanity and never endanger it again. Soon after the Arthur Maxson rose to power and became Elder of the East Coast Chapter he forged a mixed doctrine of Lyons’ unorthodox ways and the Orthodox way. Other Chapters are more lenient with their recruiting. Example(s):Vault dweller, courier and chosen one. However exceptions have been made in the past for outsiders who show they can be very useful for the brotherhood. The Brotherhood of Steel do not typically openly recruit outsiders. Even now, more than two centuries after the Great War, the Brotherhood continues to restrict the use and knowledge of their technological finds, even within their own ranks to certain extents. They are notoriously secretive with their discoveries and distrustful of outsiders, even outright hostile in some cases. Officially, the Brotherhood seeks to salvage such knowledge so that it may be used for the benefit of mankind within the future and to stop it from being Mis-used, but, in reality, they are quite selective as to what is important enough to be saved, often ignoring basic but potentially useful technologies, (such as agriculture and civil engineering), in favor of Military Hardware like energy weapons and Power Armor. The Brotherhood of Steel is a Paramilitary Organisation, devoted to the recovery and preservation of Pre-War technology and information.
